Yohji Yamamoto is an award winning and influential Japanese fashion designer based in Tokyo and Paris, and launched his designs in 1981. The designer originally studied law at Keio University before studying fashion design at Bunk Fashion College. He is known for his avant-garde tailoring featuring Japanese design aesthetics. He is also the designer for Y’s. His inspiration was to make men’s clothes for women noting that all he wanted was for women to wear men’s clothing. Yamamoto is known for an avant-garde spirit in his clothing, frequently creating designs far removed from current trends. His signature oversized silhouettes in black often feature drapery in varying textures. Both the Yohji Yamamoto line and Y’S are especially popular in Tokyo. The designer has also become familiar to consumers through his collaborations with other fashion brands including Adidas and Hermes as well as collaborations with artists such as Tina Turner and Elton John.
