Martin Margiela was first launched in 1989 with a collection that applied 'grunge' techniques that shocked and intrigued the world; Margiela worked for his own brand for 20 years and left the label in 2009. Margiela graduated from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp in 1979. In 1984 Martin moved to Paris to work as a design assistant to Jean Paul Gaultier. In 1997 he became womenswear director of classic design house Hermes and left in 2003. In 2002 diesel group owner Renzo rosso brought shares in his company and it became a public company. John Galliano became the houses creative director in late 2014.
