Givenchy: Back to black

Calling all fashionistas, the Givenchy show pieces are on-line now! Far from macabre, this season’s black is luxurious, luminous and exclusive. To work the goth-chic look, think impeccable tailoring mixed with daring transparency and team a seriously elegant sheer organza pleated blouse with dandy-esque wool pencil trousers. Between Victorian grace and seductive romanticism, le noir is enigmatic but utterly wearable, especially punctuated with touches of white, beige and cream. As for shoes, devilishly inventive open toe ankle boots and elegantly modern strappy wedges will make everybody’s head spin. Goths are definitely leaving the dirt for sparkling spotlights so embrace the return of black and reveal your inner dark queen…

Peter Pilotto SS09

For the second time round, print master Peter Pilotto and draping expert Christopher de Vos created stunning dresses featuring Peter Pilotto’s trademark intergalactic prints. This season, long jersey skirts elegantly swathed around the waist and tailored lamé sleeveless jackets which came in soft pink, cobalt blue and green were introduced to the collection. We also loved the stone adorned shoulders, adding instant power to the silhouette and immediate magic to the eye. A collection exploding with unique prints and a combination of vivid colors and softer pastels left us wanting more from the experimental design duo.

Undercover: Urban punk attitude

It is not all casual street wear (i.e. the oversized hooded grey sweat) at Undercover this winter. Avant-garde men’s tailoring is added to the superhero inspired mix of quilted coats and loose knits. The autumnal shades of grey, black, beige and blue are the colours to worship. A very special mark had to be given to the indigo blue knitted cardi with leather patches and the urban punk biker jacket available in turquoise. Jun Takahashi’s designs are raw, dark and deconstructed and this winter he has taken us to a more colorful darkness - creating a delicate harmony between beauty and malice. J’adore!

Undercover is available in the Feathers stores in Knightsbridge and Notting Hill.

Moncler: light as a Feather

Moncler is taking the high road to success, bringing their legendary puffers back to the city. They are not just for skiing holidays anymore (even though I’ll be wearing mine on the slopes for Christmas…) and are taking over the high fashion scene! Trend-focused Moncler has successfully taken the puffer out of winter sporty boredom. Think trans-seasonal cosy wrapping. Voluptuous or ultra thin, Moncler puffers, light as a breath of air makes you want to be cold…really!

Meadham Kirchhoff SS09

Central Saint Martins graduates Edward Meadham and Benjamin Kirchhoff, were back on the London catwalk for their second season and did not disappoint. A profusion of beautiful and distinctive shirts were seen teamed with washed denim and structured jackets with cutaway sleeves and cross-lacing details. Lace was the main focus of the collection with shirts adorned with darkly shredded or soft appliquéd lace detailing. Edgy Romance was in the air for spring and Meadham Kirchhoff certainly delivered.

Charles Anastase SS09

It was Degas ballerina meets Lolita at the Charles Anastase Spring/Summer 09 show. Hems and pockets were adorned with organza ruffles and preppy went sexy with sheer Luella-esque petticoats worn with nude knee-high stockings and black suspenders. Charles Anastase embraced the return of the light washed denim and so did we, especially through his adorable cropped jackets with detachable frilly trims. It was a  whimsical yet polished collection that Charles put together for Spring/Summer and we had to give a special mark to the accessory du jour; Linda Farrow huge nerdy specs!

Emma Cook SS09

Emma Cook fans will be pleased: the designer returned for Spring/Summer 09 with her trademark ruffles and pleats, this time round mixed with safari prints, fringing and unusual zip details. Romantic layering and playful prints opened the show with a delicate slate grey silk tank and skirt combination and her dresses adorned with tassels revealed a modern take on the 1920s. By the end of the show we were in heaven, watching models strolling down the catwalk wearing plastic anoraks with bead and crystal encrusted cuffs and collars. In a season dominated by frills, fringes and pleats, Emma Cook not only delivered but was full of surprises too.

Basso & Brooke SS09 catwalk report

Given the unique elegance of this season’s Japanese inspired collection we can easily imagine Basso & Brooke’s dazzling print dresses being on the hot-list of every fashionista in town. The palette of yellow, crimson and aqua is absolutely delicious and the origami-like chiffon blouses look fabulous worn with cigarette crops or peg trousers (yes, you’ll still be wearing them for spring). Colourful and distinctive prints of owls, swans, red lips and butterflies were seen on draped jersey and silk. For evening dressing, daring sheer details as well as beautiful plaited constructions on full length gowns were definitely taking romance to another level. We also loved the giant hair-grips created by Stephen Jones.

40 years of Feathers means party central at the Knightsbridge store

Photography by Kat Walks

Mid-way through London Fashion Week, we opened our doors to the fashion crown for a serious celebration, to mark our 40th birthday and the launch of Feathersfashion.com. And boy did London’s fashionable young things come out to play! The night kicked off at Feathers, Knightsbridge with champagne from Moët and Lychee Martinis from Snow Queen Vodka. By 8pm the store was heaving, with fashion editors, stylists and party people tucking into delicious mini leek tartlets, salmon gravadlax and gooey spoons of risotto. Indescribably yummy chocolate brownies and bite-size lemon meringue pies then arrived as a crowd-pleasing desert. Jackson Scott strolled in shortly after, entourage in tow, to present us with a fantastic acoustic set, during which we spotted designers Nathan Jenden and Richard Sorger stop by for a cocktail. Goody bags in hand - complete with Linda Farrow sunnies, scarf from Kristensen-Du-Nord and styling treats from Toni & Guy - we headed to The Wellington Club for the after-party with music from the Voguettes and Wade Crescent. No doubt, a few sore heads the morning after. Ah, another day, another London Fashion Week Party.

To mark the occasion, we’re hosting an interactive art installation by artist Rowan Mersh in the window of Feathers, Knightsbridge - so if you’re in the area - stop by the store to check it out.

We’re also holding an exclusive cocktail reception at Feathers, Knightsbridge, presenting the UK launch of the Linda Farrow Projects collection. Featuring an acoustic set from Jackson Scott, music from Pandora’s Jukebox and goodies from Linda Farrow Projects, plus an after party at The Wellington Club with DJ sets from Stunners International and The Voguettes - it’s sure to be a night to remember for London’s fashion crowd.

Autumnal colours at Toga

Autumnal colours at Toga, available in Feathers boutiques, Knightsbridge and Notting Hill

Yasuko Furuta is the talent behind the Toga label of directional clothing. The self taught designer built up her fashion credentials in Japan, as a freelance stylist. Her first show came to the Tokyo catwalks in 2001 and by 2006 the Toga label was shown at the influential Paris Fashion Week. Toga is a unique and modern collection of pieces, avant-garde in design and deconstructed in shape.

For autumn, Toga takes a diverse turn from last season’s colourful military infused collection, by injecting a softer feminine feel to the range. Think exaggerated appliqué details, nip and tuck pleats, gently overlapping fabrics and texture upon texture – all in a warm palette of ochre, forest green, slate grey and chocolate brown.

Toga is sold in Feathers boutiques in Knightsbridge and Notting Hill and is not currently available at Feathersfashion.com

New to Feathers: Peter Pilotto

London-based label Peter Pilotto has attracted much critical acclaim since the arrival of the AW08 collection. Intergalactic prints, a feminine silhouette and a colour-clash that’s surely a nod to the big-bang theory were all pioneered by the label’s design duo, Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos.

To mark the launch of the collection at Feathers and on the eve of London Fashion Week, Peter Pilotto talks about the current collection and what’s inspiring the label for SS09…

On the success of AW08:
‘I guess it is the mix of prints and colours – having ugly and beautiful shades right next to each other in order to find a new balance and beauty. At the same time we work on three-dimensional soft sculptural clothes, so there is an interactive mix of print, colour and shape to create a new body.’

On the concepts behind the aesthetic:
‘Inter galactic traveller, a traveller between ages, apocalyptic, rockabilly nomad of no nationality, other worldly Americana, intergalactic pirate… these were the ideas and themes that shaped the collection. Our designs always reflect what we love, and what we imagine women should be wearing.’

On creating shapes to compliment the female form:
‘Our designs are very much about the female body. It is important for us to find new ways to respond to the female form, yet with traditional aesthetics. We want to make garments and prints that interact with the body and its shape, in that way we both enhance and reveal the female body.’

On the SS09 collection:
‘We will continue the bold prints and soft sculptural shapes, plus we'll be experimenting with embroideries... but that has to stay a surprise until we reveal it!’

Haider Ackerman

Urbane sophistication leads the way for Haider Ackerman’s androgynous autumn aesthetic.

Colombian-born, Antwerp-trained Haider Ackermann shows sophisticated clothing with a monastery feel for winter. His signature wafty draping and layering still remains strong, while some ostrich feathers add a touch of elegance and femininity. The urban sophistication continues with the exquisite softness of his folded collar, silk satin tunics and dresses, and silk trousers gathered at the front. As for the colour, Ackerman’s palette is soft, muted and utterly desirable - you will want to wear these pieces day and night.

Limi Feu

Designer Limi Feu works the Yamamoto trademarks into her directional autumn collection

For the second time round, Limi Feu is following in her father’s footsteps with the monochrome palette and the “Yamamoto” black tailored pieces. But the influence stops there as Limi Feu knows how to add girlish frivolity to severe tailoring; androgyny leaves place to Edwardiana, with bubble skirts and princess coats. White shirts are also in abundance in her AW08 collection. From cropped, button-up styles to team with an oversized dress to longer tunic shirts, gathered at the shoulders to layer beneath mannish knitwear expect the white shirt to make a comeback in your winter wardrobe. Trend addicts will be pleased to know the collection did not disappoint, delivering a black lace trim cropped shirt – so chic for this season’s gothic inspired aesthetic.
